In July 2013 a team from Basho joined up with a team of Gilt engineers at Gilt’s Dublin office to spend a few days testing how Riak would handle Gilt’s production traffic on the company’s main user store. Gilt’s team aimed to not simply evaluate Riak’s performance, but to prove that it could actually be implemented in production. In order to achieve this, the team put Riak in production and let production traffic prove its reliability. In this talk Jim will discuss this process, the results of this stress test, and how Gilt – one of the top eCommerce companies in the U.S. – managed to test the feature in production without outages or other interruptions. He will discuss the strategy, tools, and processes necessary to achieve this feat in just five days, and also cover Gilt’s motivation for investigating Riak. The ability to have a Riak cluster spanning multiple data centers could expand this most-critical source of data across the company’s physically separated data centers and into the cloud.
