At Monsanto, Hadoop is primarily being used for data processing and analysis of machine data generated from sequencing and genotyping machines. As usage of the Hadoop clusters grows, so does the demands around management and monitoring of these systems.

In this talk, we present on how Monsanto uses Cloudera Manager to successfully manage their Hadoop clusters. From installation, to configuration management, service monitoring, trouble shooting and support integration, Cloudera Manager provides Monsanto a comprehensive set of tools to effectively manage their production workloads on the Hadoop clusters.

We will review all the features available in Cloudera manager and highlight the ones that have been most helpful to Monsanto. We will share some of the lessons learnt and best practices on how to use Cloudera Manager. We will conclude with recommendations for improvements and a preview of the future roadmap for Cloudera Manager.

Bala Venkatrao is currently Director, Products at Cloudera, a software pioneer in the Big Data space, aimed at bringing Hadoop and other related cloud technologies to enterprises. At Cloudera, Bala is involved in a wide array of activities including Product Management, Marketing and Partnership Development. He also leads the Customer Advocacy function to ensure the needs of customers are addressed most effectively through products and services.
Prior to joining Cloudera, Bala worked at CA Technologies, where he was the founding member of CA’s cloud business unit. He was instrumental in shaping CA’s cloud strategy that led to the formation of the new business unit and several strategic acquisitions. He also conceptualized and led the product management effort for an innovative cloud service management product. Bala also ran the CEO Innovation fund at CA, investing in new ideas related to virtualization, cloud, security and green IT
Prior to CA, Bala worked as a management consultant at the Parthenon Group. He has also worked for several years at Sun Microsystems, designing their next generation server systems.
Bala holds an MBA from MIT Sloan and completed his master’s/bachelor’s in Electrical/Computer engineering. He was also a 2008 Fellow of the Startup Leadership Program in Boston, where he worked on a new cloud computing start-up idea that he pitched to investors.

Aparna is Director of Engineering at Cloudera, where she leads the development of Cloudera Manager – the industry’s first end-to-end management application for Apache Hadoop. Prior to Cloudera, she worked on search monetization products at Yahoo! and on contextual advertising systems at Microsoft. Aparna holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Arizona State University.
