A growing number of organizations want to publish their data.

Traditionally “publishing data” meant sending out or making available for download Excel files, PDF documents, PowerPoint presentations or even distributing printed material. But modern data publication is about structured data, open access, standards, APIs, data visualizations and online access to up-to-date material.

This is hard to get right, and seemingly small mistakes may dramatically affect the usage and impact of the published data.

At DataMarket we have been on the receiving end of data from many of the World’s key data providers including the World Bank, UN, Economist Intelligence Unit, local statistics offices and central banks in order to make their data available on our data portal DataMarket.com. Lately we’ve also been helping leading information companies publishing their data, providing them with both technology and consultation.

These experiences have taught us a lot about best practices for effectively publishing data for 3rd party use, whether for free or for a fee. In this session we will share our key findings, allowing others to learn from our experiences, mistakes – and successes.

Broad, yet practical, the talk will cover issues ranging from business models and promotion to visualization tools and other technologies.
