Analytics from 330 million smartphones

Flurry’s analytics and advertising platform for mobile tracks data on over 330 million devices per month. We operate a 500 node Hadoop and HBase cluster to mine and manage all this data. This talk will go over some of the lessons learned, architecture choices, and advantages of running this big data platform. Some of the covered topics include:

  • Lessons learned from operating a large production Hadoop cluster
  • Fault tolerance in the Flurry architecture

Sean co-founded Flurry, Inc. (http://flurry.com) in 2005 to take advantage of the rapidly expanding mobile application ecosystem and growing potential of mobile phones. Today, Flurry is the leading provider of services to developers of mobile applications, working with over 60,000 developers of applications for iOS, Android, Blackberry and other platform. Flurry’s flagship product, Flurry Analytics, provides in depth intelligence to developers about their mobile applications and tracks over 1.2 Billion application sessions per day. Prior to Flurry, Sean worked in the eServices group of Verizon Communications where he built commercial services from emerging technologies such as WiFi and VoIP. Sean holds a Bachelor of Arts in Engineering from Dartmouth College and a Master of Engineering from Cornell University in Computer Science.
