This workshop will be about emotional design and storytelling in healthcare. We will work through exercises to move through four phases of designing for emotional response. People generally make decisions based on emotion, we can impact health care by strategically positioning data to help validate a patient’s emotional response to design, in order to change behaviors and effect healthcare outcomes. Data only really only comes into play when a person is trying to rationalize emotional decisions that have a already been made. This workshop will teach people how to do design products that take advantage of this. The research and design principles are based on Amik’s master thesis work at New York University.

Amik’s first business failed. Unable to part with his Amazing Spider-Man collection, the comic book store he started in his mother’s basement shut down. But the start-up bug had taken hold, and he started one business after another for the next 17 years.
While earning his undergraduate degree, he developed an e-commerce sales platform and moved nutraceutical products across three continents. Post degree, he helped establish Medistem Laboratories, Inc. He expanded the company from research facility to fully functioning clinic, leading up to an IPO in 2005.
But at heart, Amik is a data nerd and design geek. He was recognized as the 2012 Visualized Data Communications Fellow for his data science and visualizations that made NYPD Stop and Frisk data more accessible and transparent. As a designer, his philosophies emphasize minimalism: but from an artistic perspective, he explores the relationship between beauty and chaos. Professionally, he has also worked on augmented reality projects for Mercedes-Benz and the launch of UNIQLO.com as a former designer at Razorfish.
Today, Amik is focused on a startup that is designing new interactions between doctors and patients with mobile and web based technologies. He is the founder, primary research/data scientist, and guides the UX and interaction design for the company.
Amik holds two separate B.A. degrees from the University of Kansas; in English and Japanese Language and Literature. He earned his master degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University where his focus was on data, design, and complex systems.
